Recording available here: https://youtu.be/qBpIGJ1kANI

Join us as Susan Abbott tells us of the life of Captain Edward Penniman: one of the most successful whaling captains of the 19th century. He lived his entire life on Fort Hill in Eastham — except for the 22 years when he was sailing the globe in search of whales. In his retirement, he helped to found the Eastham Universalist Society and was chair of the building committee. Learn about Penniman’s whaling career, his innovative home, and how the design of the chapel echoes the historic house on Fort Hill.

Susan Abbott is an Eastham resident and president of the Nauset Light Preservation Society. Her in-laws, George and Rosemary Abbott, were members of the Nauset Fellowship and helped to spark Susan’s interest in Eastham history. She gives tours of the Penniman House as a volunteer for the Cape Cod National Seashore, and also guides tours of Eastham’s lighthouses.
