SUMMARY:A Thousand Miracles: From Surviving the Holocaust to Judging Genocide
DESCRIPTION:In this presentation\, Theodor Meron will discuss his recent memoir\, A Thousand Miracles\, which traces an extraordinary journey from surviving the ghettos and concentration camps of Nazi Germany\, losing most of his family in the Holocaust\, and finding refuge in British Palestine\, to a distinguished career dedicated to justice and the rule of law. \nHe will share how these experiences shaped his work as a scholar\, legal advisor to governments\, and president of two United Nations tribunals\, where he helped deliver landmark decisions on genocide and war crimes. Reflecting on both his personal and professional life\, he will explore the enduring importance of international criminal justice and the lessons his remarkable journey offers for our world today. \nTheodor Meron was born in Poland. As a child he survived the Holocaust\, but lost his home\, most of his family\, and years of freedom. In 1945\, he emigrated to Mandatory Palestine. He holds law degrees from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem\, Harvard University\, and the University of Cambridge. He is a world leader in the scholarship and practice of international criminal justice\, and is currently a visiting fellow at Oxford University. \nLearn more at 10 a.m. on Sunday\, August 16\, 2026. All are welcome. \n\nAt the Chapel in the Pines\, 220 Samoset Road in Eastham.  Doors open at 9:30.\nAlso on Zoom via this Zoom program link.

SUMMARY:A History of Nauset Fellowship
DESCRIPTION:Founding member Bob Seay will discuss why the Nauset Fellowship was formed\, who was behind it\, and the decision to purchase the Chapel in 1979. Older members may know the story\, but newcomers may be curious about the Fellowship’s origin story. Our beginnings shaped our future and makes us different from many other congregations on the Cape. It may also reveal some of the reasons for our success in establishing and sustaining a Unitarian Universalist presence in Eastham for almost 50 years. \nBob Seay\, an Eastham resident\, is recently retired as the transportation reporter for GBH News. He formerly hosted Morning Edition for GBH News\, and worked as a broadcast journalist for more than three decades. SUMMARY:Public Safety 2.0
DESCRIPTION:Nearly everyone in jails and prisons will return to their communities. What happens while they are in custody — and when they are released — matters not only to them\, but to all of us. Releasing people without support is not a strategy for public safety\, it’s a recipe for failure. \nJoin Barnstable County Sheriff Donna D. Buckley\, the second elected female sheriff in Massachusetts history\, to learn how she is transforming the Barnstable County Correctional Facility into a place where incarcerated individuals find education\, treatment\, and reentry support so that they have the tools to rebuild their lives.  Elected in 2022\, Sheriff Buckley has created an in-house treatment team. With a staff of educators\, treatment specialists\, counselors and community volunteers\, she has added more than three dozen classes and programs to the facility itself. \nThe work doesn’t end inside the jail.  She has opened the Cape’s first re-entry center to support justice involved individuals transitioning back to the community. Because community understanding is crucial\, Sheriff Buckley invites community members to meet incarcerated individuals through the Frederick Douglass Project for Justice.  Her approach is founded on data. The underlying factor in over 70 % of crimes is addiction\, mental health struggles and children trauma. Addressing these issues is how we will change behavior. Dehumanizing and punishment alone only make them worse.  Come meet Sheriff Buckley\, whose leadership is changing the justice landscape of Cape Cod and beyond. \nLearn more at 10 a.m. on Sunday\, August 30\, 2026. All are welcome. \n\nAt the Chapel in the Pines\, 220 Samoset Road in Eastham.  Doors open at 9:30.\nAlso on Zoom via this Zoom program link.
