DESCRIPTION:Led by our own Bob Seay\, we will listen to the opening chorale of Johann Sebastian Bach’s St. Matthew Passion\, accompanied by commentary from Leonard Bernstein. Together\, we’ll explore its structure and consider why it is particularly well suited for performance in a large church setting. \nJohann Sebastian Bach first performed his monumental St. Matthew Passion at St. Thomas Church in Leipzig\, Germany\, likely on Good Friday in 1727 or 1729. Bach wrote this masterpiece for two choirs and orchestras\, specifically for the Vespers service at this church. \nBob Seay is a founding member of Nauset Fellowship. SUMMARY:Pay Less\, Get More Care
DESCRIPTION:Join us as Bonnie Shepard from the Cape Cod Coalition for Universal Health Care discusses Medicare for All in Massachusetts\, a bill which would provide universal health coverage for all state residents without co-pays\, premiums\, or deductibles\, through a single payer — the Massachusetts Health Care Trust. \nThe political obstacles to passage of the bill in the State House reveal a lack of democracy and transparency\, and the role of industry lobbyists. The high costs and poor health outcomes of the current for-profit system will be summarized\, with a focus on the abuses of Medicare Advantage plans. This bill would ban private insurance coverage for services already covered by the single-payer system. \nBonnie will discuss the strategy being used on the Cape to compare the current costs of health insurance for towns with the costs under Medicare for All\, showing significant savings both for towns and town employees\, including the savings found in Eastham. She will also summarize the new economic analysis from Mass-Care\, showing eye-popping savings for the whole state. We will wrap up with an explanation of what we hope to achieve through the citizen’s petition at town meeting\, which includes follow-up after the meeting by Eastham town leaders and citizens. \n\n\n\nLearn more at 10 a.m. on Sunday\, April 19\, 2026. DESCRIPTION:Please visit the First Encounter Coffeehouse website for updated information. \nRichard Shindell lives as both an immigrant and emigrant\, crossing thresholds\, that informs his illumination of the human experience through narrative song. Shindell has inhabited a Zen Buddhist monastery and busked in the streets of Paris.\nOriginally from New York\, now living in Buenos Aires\, Argentina\, Shindell is a writer whose songs paint pictures\, tell stories\, juxtapose ideas and images\, inhabit characters\, vividly evoking entire worlds along the way and expanding our sense of just what it is a song may be. Meticulously recorded over three years in New York and Buenos Aires\, his most recent release\, Careless\, offered an ambitious\, luxurious\, full- length statement. Shindell immersed himself in the studio\, allowing the time and latitude to explore\, experiment\, take risks—to play—as each of these eleven songs was given form and substance. DESCRIPTION:“Where\, after all\, do universal human rights begin? In small places\, close to home\,” Eleanor Roosevelt famously said in a speech at the United Nations. As Coordinator of the Barnstable County Human Rights Advisory Commission\, Leslie Dominguez-Santos knows the status of those rights here in our home community. In this program\, she will share the data and the stories of how and where community members experience discrimination. In her overview of human rights on Cape Cod\, she will focus on the roles individuals and groups can play in preserving and protecting the rights of everyone. \nLeslie Domínguez-Santos is the Human Rights Coordinator for Barnstable County\, working to uphold and protect the rights of residents and visitors across Cape Cod. She has a long career of community-based work and advocacy. Her fundraising efforts raised millions of dollars for critical environmental justice and public health initiatives in Chelsea and East Boston. Her policy work has impacted legislation in MA and IL in the areas of affordable and supportive housing\, anti-human trafficking efforts\, and health equity.
