What is Humanism?

There are many definitions of humanism. If there is a common thread, it is that each of us is responsible for finding his own values and goals in life. Beyond this, respect, kindness, compassion, freedom, love of life, gratitude, responsibility for the well-being of one another and the world, openness to truth, a scientific world view, imagination, and a sense of humor are often involved. Humanism need not preclude belief in a higher power, God, brahman, the Way.

A number of well-known people, such as Einstein, John Dewey, Carl Sagan, Carl Rogers, Abraham Maslow, Linus Pauling, Steve Allen, Isaac Asimov, Bertrand Russell, Stephen Jay Gould, and Kurt Vonnegut, have identified themselves as humanists, but many more fit the discription.
